"When are you interviewing Haim?" a text arrives. "My request was to ask if I can be their newest bandmate."

There's just one problem: The sender also longs to be the Haims' newest recruit. What's more, we are not alone. Multiple celebrated fans have also begged for the honor.

The evidence suggests an irresistible appeal is going on. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their path playing gigs at neighborhood delis with their family. Today, they are multi-time Grammy Award contenders.

Similar to the best groups, they're a inseparable unit. Their visuals repeatedly feature them walking in harmony down the avenues of Los Angeles. During performances, they perform with such unfettered happiness you can't help but think, "I wish to be a piece of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that fans came up to us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I got a drum kit'," says Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "That is the greatest honour. That's an award in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can motivate people to form a group."

"Therefore everyone are welcome to be the honorary part of the family."

Historic Milestone

The trio are connecting from their homes, where they're recovering after an major tour in support of their fourth album, I Quit.

They're right now reeling from the news it's been in the running for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first female band ever in the running for the prize.

"I tune into the announcements every year, so it almost feels like a surreal movie when your name is read out," says Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Am I hearing this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The importance of the honor is deeply felt by the sisters.

"We truly set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a huge step," says Alana. "Yet we're just thankful for the pioneers that inspired us."

Heartbreak and Candor

The record emerged from a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters were single, and the music explores that strange in-between place where you're happy to be free, but not yet ready to start anew.

The lyrics follow endings and partings. The sisters want love, but not the kind of love they've had. You can hear them working out in the moment who they aspire to be.

"I adore description, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a slogan. You have to consciously practice blocking the noise and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Development of Sound

That recent resilience required a fresh approach – more unpolished and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that started with the drum sound.

"Drums are such a detailed thing, and I care so much about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our memoir," jokes Alana. "I always say, our albums don't start until we find the right drum sound."

Anecdotes and Collective Camaraderie

The band's openness shaped the album's rollout, where the sisters disclosed some of their romantic tales.

Someone broke up with Este over a health consideration. Alana told a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"Experiencing these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," explains Alana. "So to be able to share those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's therapeutic."

An Assured Legacy

One can easily sense a shift in the band. Today, Haim are more confident of their position in the industry.

They're major draws, with hit albums and an international following.

But the band will consistently be their primary focus.

"My sisters and I have been making music since I was little," concludes Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were supposed to do. And I'm really fortunate we've reached this point and we're still kicking."
