Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Injections Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a prominent health publication points out that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users purchasing such treatments must be cognizant of the risk of rapid weight regain when the medication is stopped," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a reversion to original weight in about a year and a half.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.

Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting generally experience a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have come off the medication describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if a switch flipping and you become extremely hungry," described one woman.

The struggle is compounded if users have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Widespread Use

Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.

  • Use is more common among women than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while these medications are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and long-term success likely depends on combined lifestyle support.
